Local school upgrade at Makandi Estates
Makandi Estates continues its successful supply of export grade Avocados to the markets of Europe through South African based fruit trading specialists, Westfalia Fruit. Westfalia is a leading multinational supplier of fresh subtropical fruit and related processed products to international markets. They grow, source, ripen, pack, processes and market sustainably-grown avocados year round and have developed close links with Rift Valley's Zimbabwe based Makandi Estates over the years. Westfalia supply avocados to the Dutch retail company Albert Heijn, who's charitable organization the Albert Heijn Foundation (AHF), states their objective: “to improve the living conditions and prospects of African suppliers who cultivate the fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers sold by Albert Heijn, as well as their additional suppliers, employees, families and surrounding communities”.
The Makandi team have therefore made a successful proposal to the AHF for assistance with the upgrade of the local Madziwa Primary School, in need of two new classrooms, desks, chairs and a perimeter fence. The Foundation has agreed to assist with a $17,000 contribution to the development, with Makandi providing the balance funding to complete the project.
The project represents a practical way of improving prospects for Makandi worker's families, with a significant proportion of the school children having parents working on the farm. Management hopes that further collaboration with the AHF will be possible in order to implement high impact projects of direct benefit to this rural community.
